DIY SECURITY CAMERAS | RNS PICKS

Want to do it yourself?
Here's what we'd buy.

Not every job needs a technician. If you're handy and just want a few good cameras on the house, barn, gate or deer stand, these are the Reolink cameras RNS recommends — the same brand we install for farms and families across Tuscarawas County.

OUR TOP PICKS

Pick the camera for the spot.

Start with where the camera is going: does it have power? Wi-Fi? Is it a front door, a barn aisle or a gate a quarter mile out? Prices change often, so check Reolink's site for today's price and current deals.

Battery + Solar Camera

Reolink Argus 4 Pro with Solar Panel

Wire-free 4K camera with a wide dual-lens view and color night vision. Add the solar panel and you rarely touch it again.

  • Mounts anywhere with Wi-Fi signal
  • Color night vision, person/vehicle alerts
  • No monthly fee required
RNS tip: great for sheds, porches and run-in barns close enough to the house Wi-Fi. Point the solar panel south.

No Wi-Fi — fields & gates

4G Cellular Camera

Reolink Go PT Ultra (4G LTE + Solar)

Runs on a cellular data plan instead of Wi-Fi, with a solar panel and pan-tilt that tracks movement. Made for places your internet doesn't reach.

  • Works where there's cell signal — no internet needed
  • 360° pan-tilt with auto-tracking
  • Records to a local SD card
RNS tip: our go-to for back pastures, long lanes and equipment gates. Check your carrier's signal at the spot first — needs a small monthly data plan.
Reolink RLK8-1200B4-A PoE camera kit with NVR
Whole-property system

PoE Camera Kit

Reolink RLK8-1200B4-A (4 cameras + 8-channel NVR)

Four 12MP wired cameras and a recorder in one box. One cable per camera carries power and video, so there are no batteries to charge and recording runs 24/7.

  • 4 × 12MP cameras, room to add 4 more
  • Built-in hard drive, records continuously
  • Watch live from the Reolink app
RNS tip: the most reliable DIY option if you're comfortable running Ethernet cable. Pulling wire through a barn or attic is the part most people call us for.
Reolink Duo 3 PoE dual-lens camera
Barn aisles & driveways

Wide-Angle Dual-Lens Camera

Reolink Duo 3 PoE

Two lenses stitched into one 180° 4K picture — covers a whole barn aisle, yard or parking area with a single camera.

  • 180° panoramic view, no blind spots
  • Adds to a Reolink NVR or works on its own
  • PoE: one cable for power and video
RNS tip: mount it high at the end of a stall aisle and you'll see every door. Pairs perfectly with the PoE kit above.
Reolink Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)
Front door

Video Doorbell

Reolink Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)

See and talk to whoever's at the door from your phone, with package and person alerts and no required subscription.

  • Two-way talk from the Reolink app
  • Person & package detection
  • Uses your existing doorbell wiring
RNS tip: add a Reolink Chime if you want it to ring inside the house, and make sure your Wi-Fi is strong at the front door.
Reolink Go Ranger PT 4G trail camera in camouflage
Hunters & wildlife

4G Trail Camera

Reolink Go Ranger PT + Camo Solar Panel

A cellular trail camera that sends 4K clips of deer and other game straight to your phone — no hiking out to pull SD cards and no Wi-Fi needed.

  • 360° pan-tilt view with animal recognition
  • Camouflage camera and solar panel
  • Works on cell signal; records to a microSD card
RNS tip: mount it on a feeder, food plot or trail 10–12 feet up and angled down. Check cell signal at the stand first — it needs a small monthly data plan.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Four things we see DIYers miss.

Check the signal first

Stand where the camera will go with your phone. Weak Wi-Fi or weak cell signal there means a choppy camera later.

Mount high, aim down

About 8–10 feet up keeps it out of reach and gives a better view of faces and plates. Avoid pointing straight into the sun.

Think about storage

Use a quality SD card or an NVR so you keep your own recordings — no monthly fee needed.

Barns are tough on gear

Dust, moisture and ammonia wear on electronics. Use outdoor-rated cameras even inside a barn.

RATHER HAVE IT DONE RIGHT?

RNS can plan and install the whole system.

Running cable through barns, getting Wi-Fi out to the outbuildings, mounting cameras on poles, or tying cameras, Wi-Fi and Starlink into one network — that's what we do every week. We'll walk the property, show you where each camera goes, and set it all up on your phone before we leave.
